It’s interesting that the “high five” was not widely known until the late 1970s. As a a NYC kid (at least since age 4) I knew “slap me five” but that’s not the same thing as a high five–apparently that’s a “low five” or just

Grass Widows (Olsynium douglasii) are drooping purple crocusesque flowers that grow in meadows along the Columbia River, though the phrase has another more common meaning. Saturday the weather was mild enough to head out for a brief hike. Little streams running everywhere, though the grass is still yellow with only the occasional spot of green by a vernal pool or moss. R spotted this one along a faint path along the canyon holding Catherine Creek. This is about 70 miles east of Portland on the Washington side. It was not too windy, and on the way out there were a few frogs calling from the pools. Ah.

Found this old postcard for a Trike/Sprague show, at the Charleston, a bar/pizza joint where the owner would swing flashlights around as makeshift spotlights. Circa 1996?

LIDAR is essentially radar or sonar with [freakin'] lasers, plus GPS. A plane with a LIDAR unit can scan the ground below and get really accurate high-resolution 3D maps of the terrain and buildings. You can spot old roads and even trails in forest, buried volcanic craters, odd hidden geological features, map wetland, measure tree height, find landslides, etc. The Oregon Department of Geology has so far scanned about a tenth of the state and you can cruise around using their online map site.
