I am getting tired of cleaning out registration spam (they don’t comment, but they do create tons of fake registrations), so I’ve added a new captcha thing to the commenter registration. It seems to work fine, and those of you already registered I don’t think will have to do it again. Registration remains pretty easy, folks, so don’t hold back (so long as you aren’t a spammer).

I don’t know if this is a bunch of lurkers, but since most of names and emails seemed random, I started scanning WordPress sites to see if this was some sort of known spam or hack attempt. Well, finally found something on the blog the creator of MacOSXHints.com runs that describes the same symptoms and what might be up.

With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password.

So I went and removed “suspicious” accounts. If I deleted your account, sorry, please sign up again. And yes, I’ve updated the version of WordPress we’re running. Can’t you tell how much cooler we are already?
