Critiquing New Yorker cartoons

After a few weeks of intrigue, Tom Hart has revealed himself to be the mastermind behind the recent New Yorker cartoon analysis site, Sh*t My New Yorker Cartoons. Older posts are here.

I guess the title is a reference to the blog-turned-short-lived-TV-show, “Sh*t My Dad says?” Not sure what happened to the verb, but anyway, if you read the New Yorker for the cartoons, or at least read them all first (it’s distracting when you are earnestly trying to follow a story about penguin habitat studies and there’s a desert island comic on the next page) you’ll probably appreciate a chance to reflect on what makes particular comics succeed or fail. And I totally agree about Farley Katz.

How to Draw Bugs Bunny

It’s always interesting to see people drawing, and even though this is a late-form Bugs (getting hyper-cute), I like watching it unfold and hearing the comment about the detail of the subtleties of a smile and a getting a leg to carry weight (despite drawings have no weight).

Do you too get mighty depressed when sick? OK, this is worse that the typical flu. And an exploration of some dark self-loathing and regret, and then what I assume is auto-biographical history. But read it! It’s really good.

Available in giant wait five-minutes-to-load posts (1-10, or the even bigger 1-14). I’d start with the faster-to-load parts 1-6 chunk and see if you get into it.

A collection of covers for this early-twentieth century dime novel found on Annie Murphy’s blog caught my eye. Nice design, even if the hero’s name is absolutely ridiculous. I think Mr Burns must have been reading these as a kid. Dig the owls flying out of the woods.

The transcribed contents of Work and Win, No. 787 on the Stanford site do include this great joke:

“Since I learned to run my own automobile,” said Scadsbeigh, “my acquaintance has extended.”

“How so?” inquired his friend.

“I have come in contact with so many people.”

For the past three years David Lasky and Frank Young have been working hard on a comic [aka graphic novel, not "funny"] history of the Carter Family. Sounds like it’ll come out with Abrams in this winter or Spring 2012. I find something a bit Gasoline Alley about Lasky‘s style this time (he’s a master of mimicry).
